Description

Studio portrait of Captain Muir Purser, St George's English Rifle Regiment. He joined the St. George's English Rifle Regiment in 1903 as a private at the age of seventeen. He was accepted for active service abroad on 26 July 1915 as a major in the 30th Battalion and Officer Commanding of C Company, serving in Egypt and France. On 1 December 1916 he was appointed to command the 29th Battalion with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) on 26 November 1917 for his courage and determination in leading his Battalion in an attack and after capturing the objective was instrumental in repulsing several enemy counter attacks. He returned to Australia in March 1918 after receiving his DSO from King George V, and his AIF appointment was terminated on 6 June 1918. In 1919 he was awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers Decoration (VD) while commanding the 2/45th Infantry (Militia) Battalion. On 1 July 1940 he was appointed to command the 36th Battalion (St. George's English Rifles), and saw active service in New Guinea. On 15 April 1943 he was placed on the Retired List with the honorary rank of Colonel.
