Description

A group of unidentified French gunners posed with a heavy field gun. Among them are possibly a couple of Australians. The gun's breech is open, showing it to probably be a 'de Bange Matériel de 155 mm Long, Modele 1877', adapted to carry part of the armoured shield from a '155 L Modele 1877-1914'. The shield has the name "Mary" painted on the inside upper surface. To the left of the gun, at about two meters distance, are two metal posts hammered into the ground, and secured at their top with an horizontal rail. It was part of the means by which the gun’s position relative to the ground was surveyed and established, such that the gun could be registered on a target and zeroed in after each recoil. The gun's wheels are obscured, but the wedges which were placed in position behind the wheels to arrest the gun's recoil are visible on both sides. This gun type is illustrated in 'Note sur le matériel de 155 L approprié à l'emploi des ceintures de roues et muni d'un frein de route, 10 Decembre 1915.
