Throat ornament for an officer's charger. Leather three piece strap is 1.5 cm wide and slides under the bridle headpiece. It can be adjusted using the brass buckles on each side of the headpiece. The strap is held together below the horse's throat by a pair of leather keepers and the plume then suspended from the double strap and attached gilt socket. Socket is in the shape of a waratah flower with four elongated leaves extending over the head of the flower to shape the plume of white horsehair, approx 59 cm long, with a black horsehair overlay, approx 36 cm long.
Worn by the charger of Earl Beauchamp, Governor of New South Wales, in his capacity as Honorary Colonel of the 1st Australian Horse, c 1898-1900. The unit was formed in 1897 but the uniforms and accoutrements ordered from England did not arrive until the following year.
