Description

Souvenir plastic lighter. This lighter has a clear plastic reservoir with a metal `ZIPPO' type striker assembly and a hinged lid. Inside the reservoir is a symbol on a navy coloured background, in yellow an eagle over a shield marked "1RAR./ N.Z. REGT/ 173 AIR B BRIG.". Under the shield is a yellow boomerang marked "SOUTH 1965 VIETNAM". To the left of the shield is a kangaroo over a laurel. On the right is a kiwi over a laurel. Impressed into the bottom of the reservoir is the words "U.S. PATS./ D-180.401/ 2,881,608, CANADA/ PAT.'60RD.'57/ MADE U.S.A.". Marked on both sides of the striker is the words "VU-LIGHTER/ BY SCRIPTO INC".

History / Summary

Associated with Corporal T H Parrott RAEME, 1 Battalion RAR. 1RAR was the first Australian infantry battalion to serve in Vietnam (1965). This unit served along side the (US) 173rd Airborne Brigade (separate) in Bien Hoa province.
