Description
The Greek Orthodox Monastery, to the west of the city of Jericho, was built into the side of Qarantal Mountain (Mount of Temptation) in the late 19th centuary. Caves can be seen scattered over the mountain where monks of the Byzantine period once lived. One of a series of photographs showing local people and the activities of German and Turkish soldiers. The photographs are believed to have been purchased by Australian soldiers whilst serving in Egypt and Palestine during the First World War.
