Description

A portion of the AIF Section of the parish church cemetery. The crosses at the back, bearing elliptical tablets, mark the graves of German prisoners of war (POWs). The remainder of the graves shown in the photograph, with three exceptions where English soldiers are buried, are those of Australian soldiers. The first Australian buried here was 23061 Gunner A. E. Hodges, 9th Battery, Australian Field Artillery, the burial taking place on the 13 October 1916. In another portion of the AIF Section, not shown in the photograph, is the grave of Matron J. Miles-Walker of the Australian Army Nursing Service, who was buried on the 30 October 1918. The total number of Australian graves in this cemetery, including that of Matron Miles-Walker, is 109. Identified, front row: 51187 Private John Jacob Stoops, 2nd Battalion, died 20 October 1918; 60726 (Roll of Honour shows 60725) Private Alick Raymond Matthews, 7th Battalion, died of sickness 20 October 1918; 53684 Gunner Alick Berry, Australian Field Artillery, died of influenza 21 October 1918; 63774 Gunner Cecil John McPherson, 35th Reinforcements, Australian Field Artillery, died of disease 21 October 1918; 58698 Private Oscar William Floden (Nominal Roll and Roll of Honour show Flodin), 56th Battalion, died of disease 22 October 1918.
