Description

Portrait of 1146 Sergeant Henry Kagan 'Harry' Kahan and his sister Douska Kahan, both of New York, NY, but born in Sale, Vic. Douska served between February 1918 and March 1919 with the American National Red Cross in the Tuberculosis Bureau in Paris, France. Her brother, who returned from New York to enlist in the AIF, served with the 28th Battalion between 24 May 1915 and 28 February 1919, and also wrote the battalion's history. Harry is wearing corporal's stripes immediately below the battalion's colour patch. The A on the latter signifies he fought on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The inscription on the back of the photograph reads 'To Mother, With love from Douska and Harry Paris July 2 1918'.
