Signed studio portrait of Lieutenant Colonel John Lawrence Whitham CMG DSO of the 12th and 52nd Battalion of Melbourne Vic. A Captain in the Army prior to enlisting for overseas duty on 26 August 1914 Whitham embarked from Hobart on 20 October 1914 on board HMAT Star of England. Whitham later attained the rank of Lieutenant General in the permanent forces.
