Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Claude Richard Henry Bryant MM, 4th Divisional Signal Company. Bryant enlisted on 18 February 1915 and was awarded the Military Medal as a Second Corporal (2nd Cpl) in August 1916 for "gallantry and devotion to duty" at Contalmaison, France, along with 3667 Sapper (Spr) Maurice O'Meara. 993 2nd Cpl Bryant and Spr O'Meara maintained the telephone lines between Headquarters and Artillery Brigades under heavy shellfire, allowing communication to be continued between the two points. Lt Bryant returned to Australia on 1 April 1919.
