Studio portrait of Brigadier General John Patrick McGlinn CBE VD CMG OBE. McGlinn was born in Sydney, NSW, on 11 April 1869, he enlisted in the NSW Military Force as a private in 1889 and was commissioned in 1893. In 1899 he assisted with the organisation of the second contingent to South Africa and served himself with the 1st NSW Mounted Rifles between 1900 and 1901. He was promoted to captain and awarded the Queen's South Africa medal with six clasps. In 1911 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and enlisted in the AIF on 30 September 1914, embarking from Melbourne, Victoria, on 22 December 1914 on HMAT Ulyssses, after being selected by Colonel John Monash selected him as brigade major for the 4th Infantry Brigade. While serving at Gallipoli, he temporarily commanded the Brigade in Monash's absence and during the evacuation, he removed 800 men of the 4th Brigade without loss. For his service at Gallipoli, he was twice mentioned in despatches and appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). He later served in Egypt and France, and was once again mentioned in despatches before being evacuated due to illness. He was restricted to home service, and served in England until 1920, returning to Australia in March 1920 and was placed on the unattached list as a brigadier general in July 1920. He died on 7 July 1946 in Melbourne, Vic, and was buried in St Kilda cemetery with full military honours.
