Description

Men of the 57th Battalion drawing hot tea from a cooker, prior to marching out of the Swan area to the front line in the Ypres Sector. As protection from the mud, waders were worn and, where these were not available, sandbags were wrapped around the legs and tied over the puttees. Identified, left to right: 1803 Corporal (Cpl) J Forbes; the men behind Forbes are unidentified; 1984 Sergeant C Williams (back, partially obscured); unidentified beside Williams; 1653 Cpl A F Anderson (partially obscured, looking at camera); 1964 Private (Pte) A W Steen (crouched over filling his cup); other men around the cooker are unidentified; 1688 Pte F A Greaves (second from right); 3029 Pte C Beer (extreme right).
