Description
An informal group portrait of six men of the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Identified is 189 Sergeant Henry Lacey (front row, middle) wearing a forage cap. All the others are unidentified and wearing hats. The Fifth Queensland Contingent arrived at Port Elizabeth on 1 April 1901. This unit saw plenty of fighting and were constantly in action with the Boers, including at the disastrous battle of Onverwacht on 4 January 1902 in which 13 Australians were killed and 17 wounded. The unit returned to Australia on 18 April 1902. For his service in the war, Sgt Lacey received the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. Sgt Lacey later settled in the United States where he died aged 76.
