Outdoor portrait of 2225 Private (Pte) John Frederick Quince (left) and 2181 Pte Andrew Alfred Hynds standing guard duty outside hut No 5 at Hurdcott Camp prior to embarking for service in France. Both men are wearing slouch hats, carrying a full pack and facing each other in an 'at ease' position; they are both holding standard issue .303 Lee-Enfield rifles. Pte Hynds has a bandaged left hand and index finger. Both labourers from Barry, NSW prior to enlistment, Privates Quince and Hynds embarked with the 4th Reinforcements, 53rd Battalion from Sydney on HMAT Vestalia on 11 July 1916. Whilst on active service with the 19th Battalion, Pte Quince was wounded on 3 May 1917, receiving a gunshot wound to the knee and left arm. After a period of time in hospital in England, he returned to Australia on 18 October 1917. Pte Hynds returned to Australia in the 19th Battalion on 24 December 1918.
