311610 Major (Maj) William David 'Dai' Thomas stands in front of a sand-bagged emplacement outside a villa on Route 44 south of Long Hai village. This strong point was often contested during the many battles for the province and bullet marked damage to the building gives evidence to the heavy fighting frequently experienced. Maj Thomas served in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971 in a dual capacity as a member of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) seconded from the Australian Force Vietnam (AFV). His primary appointment was as the Province Senior Advisor Pyschological Operations (PSA Psyops) for Phuoc Tuy. As a senior official, he was responsible for liaising with civil and military authorities (Vietnamese, Australian and American) in order to co-ordinate local efforts to mobilise the Vietnamese in resisting communist influence in the district and to support the Government of the Republic of Vietnam.
