Collection relating to the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) service of A232657 Sergeant William John "Bill" Guthrie, 1 Media Support Unit, Royal Australian Air Force, East Timor, 1999.

The collection consists of two wallets and two folios of letters, documents, maps, newspapers, photographs, leaflets and ephemera related to Guthrie's deployment to East Timor with 1 Media Support Unit from September to December 1999.

Wallet 1 of 2 - Consists of three folders containing official documents and ephemera collected by Guthrie during his deployment to East Timor. Folder 1 includes an ADF East Timor Handbook, an ADF tetum language guidebook, an INTERFET Individual Guidance on the Use of Force yellow card, a United Nations Human Rights Glossary booklet, a United States Army-issued booklet "This is Your Ballistic Helmet", a sheet of INTERFET Arms Receipt slips, a handwritten schedule of daily events and VIP visits to East Timor in December 1999, ADF combat ration meal information sheets, a small scale map of East Timor dated June 1999, and an ADF travel requisition form for Guthrie's return to Australia on 15 December 1999. Folder 2 includes six blank Indonesian Armed Forces blue identification cards, an Indonesian Compulsory Housing Savings booklet, an Indonesian booklet on maintenance of light weapons, a booklet titled "The History of East Timor Since 1974", and various INTERFET-issued leaflets in tetum language. Folder 3 follows with Guthrie's QANTAS boarding passes for his flights to and return from East Timor, flyer for The Big Bang charity event on 25 September 1999, business cards and ephemera collected from East Timor, blank stationary from the Turismo Beach Hotel, a program for a wedding at the Dili Museum on 23 October 1999, and two A4 targets Guthrie used for pistol practice.

Wallet 2 of 2 - Consists of three folders containing letters, emails, and other correspondence Guthrie sent or received during his time in East Timor. Folder 1 includes a postcard from Guthrie to a friend describing his accommodation and living arrangements in East Timor, two emails from colleagues regarding photographs and news articles on Guthrie, a note of thanks from Air Force News, a Christmas card from a friend, and a copy of the 19 November 1999 edition of The Dili Times. Folder 2 includes three letters and a card sent by adults and school children in Australia as "Dear Digger" letters to anonymous soldiers serving in East Timor. Folder 3 consists of five photographs; three taken in East Timor and featuring Guthrie, while the remaining two are signed portraits from news corresponents in Australia, including one of Mary Kostakidis from SBS World News.

Folio 1 of 2 - Consists of newspapers, clippings, leaflets and maps. Includes: the 30 September 1999 edition of Army News; a clipping titled "Timor Struggles to Rise from the Ashes" from the 3 October 1999 edition of The Sun Herald; lead article (titled "Brothers Serve Australia", about Guthrie and his brother Able Seaman Peter Guthrie's service in East Timor) and other pages from the 2 November 1999 edition of The Valley View; 12 November 1999 edition of Timor Lorosae Foun; clipping titled "Bob the Hawk Joins the Troops at Dili's Tourismo Hotel" from the 13 November 1999 edition of The Canberra Times; 26 November 1999 edition of The New East Timor; and the 21 December 1999 edition of The Valley View (with lead article titled "Reunited: Brothers Return Home to See Mum"). Also includes a leaflet entitled "Barang-Barang Terlarang", and a 1:7,000 scale map of Suai township, a 1:25,000 scale map of Suai with coastline.
