Model 41 tropical pattern field cap 1941 (Afrikamutze) : Afrika Korps, German Army
Description
German Army, Model 41, olive (now faded or bleached to beige) cotton twill, tropical pattern field cap. The cockade, which has been crudely sewn on, has a small hole on both sides near the seam with the visor, which indicates a triangular soutache was once fitted to the front of the cap. A tiny tuft of red coloured fabric from the soutache is still attached to the cap in the vertical seam just above the cockade. Red soutaches were worn by German artillery units. The maker's name, 'Schlesische Mutzenfabrik', is printed inside the cap on the red lining.
History / Summary
Unknown. The cap dates before 1942, when German Army Headquarters ordered that soutaches were no longer to be worn on caps. This cap was probably worn by a member of an artillery unit.
