Description

Portrait of 2932 Corporal (Cpl) Ronald Blundell Smith, 48th Battalion. A plumber from Boulder, WA prior to enlistment, Cpl Smith embarked with the rank of Private with the 9th Reinforcements, 16th Battalion from Fremantle on HMAT Hororata on 5 October 1915. Following his promotion to Lance Corporal, he was transferred to the 48th Battalion and wounded in action whilst serving in France. After recovering he rejoined his unit and was promoted to Corporal. Later reported as missing in action, it was subsequently determined that he had been wounded for a second time, taken prisoner, and interned in Germany. Because of his wounds he was repatriated back to England and, following a period of recovery, returned to Australia on 20 May 1918 and was discharged as medically unfit on 18 November 1918. The original photograph is believed to have come from the Red Cross File.
