Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Mackenzie and some of the Headquarters Staff of the 23rd Battalion at their temporary Headquarters in Lost Ravine, near Halle. The Battalion had moved forward for the attack at Mont St Quentin. This locality was subjected to extremely heavy artillery fire on the morning of 1 September. Identified: Lt Col MacKenzie DSO (extreme left); Major J. Pascoe MC (holding map); next row, front to back: Lieutenant (Lt) J. A. Wiltshire MC and Bar; Lt Col W. Brazenor DSO (behind Wiltshire); unidentified (an officer from another unit behind Brazenor); Sergeant Pollock MM; Lance Corporal J. Clough, Signaller (second from right); and unidentified (extreme right).
