Description

This print is inscribed in pen and ink: "Kanowna" at Townsville - First Australian Expeditionary Force - 8th August 1914/ sent to German New Guinea.

This inscription does not match with the historical record:
HMAT Kanowna sailed from Cairns (not Townsville) to Thursday Island on 8 August 1914 with the Kennedy Regiment on board (not the AN&MEF).

The Kennedy Regiment was not added to the AN&MEF until 6 September 1914, on the return journey from Thursday Island. This is when the unit was ordered to capture German New Guinea. However, all the men in the unit were discharged from the AN&MEF on 18 September1914 after a mutiny by some firemen on board the Kanowna.

If this is the HMAT Kanowna on 8 August 1914, then none of the soldiers aboard the ship went to German New Guinea.

There is not enough evidence to define this image further.
