Studio portrait of No 4439, Sergeant (Sgt) Donald Gordon Bock MM, 4th Battalion (4 Bn). A grocer, of Narrandera, New South Wales, he enlisted as a Private on 18 August 1915 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Wandilla on 3 February 1916 for Egypt and then on to the Western Front, France where he served for six weeks with the 1st Anzac Entrenching Battalion before being taken on strength of 4 Bn. He was promoted to Corporal in January 1917 and to Sgt two months later. Sgt Bock was awarded the Military Medal for his actions with 4 Bn at Bullecourt from 4 to 8 May 1917. He was assigned to the 1st Training Brigade in England in June 1917 before rejoining his Battalion in France on 7 October 1917. Sgt Bock was killed in action on 9 November 1917 near Ypres, Belgium. He was aged 22 years.
