Portrait of QX1253 Sergeant (Sgt) Russell Wilkinson Forster. Sgt Forster was a foundation platoon sergeant with the 2/9th Battalion. After attending officer training in Australia he rejoined the unit and was promoted to lieutenant and served in the Middle East. He was promoted to Captain and Officer Commanding C Company when the unit went to New Guinea. While fighting in Gona, Captain Forster sustained an injury to his lower jaw, for which he was evacuated to Brisbane then 113 AGH Concord, commencing a period of three years in and out of hospital undergoing plastic surgery for the serious wounds he had sustained.
