German medal commemorating the occupation of Austria, 1938
Medal issued by the Nazi Party to commemorate the annexation of Austria on 13 March 1938. The obverse shows two ethnic Germans breaking the chains of Austrian bondage and mounting a podium, showing the national emblem of eagle and swastika, carrying the banner of National Socialism. The reverse has raised text which reads 'EIN VOLK EIN REICH EIN FUHRER 13 MARZ 1938'. A small silver securing ring has been braised or soldered to the top edge of the medal to facilitate suspension from a ribbon.
On 1 May 1938, Adolph Hitler instituted the Commemorative Medal of 13 March 1938 to be awarded to all persons, military and civilian who actively contributed to the annexation of Austria. A total of 318,689 medals had been awarded when the last one was manufactured on 31 December 1940. The medal was worn over the left breast pocket. It was presented in a bright red hinged rectangular case with the Nazi National emblem (eagle & Swastika) in gold on the front.
