Studio portrait of Australian Prisoner of War (POW) 1107 Sergeant (Sgt) Norman George Ellison, 29th Battalion, from North Fitzroy, VIC at Stendal POW camp, Germany. Sgt Ellison enlisted at the age of 18 on 17 July 1915 and embarked for overseas on 10 November 1915 aboard HMAT Ascanius. He was wounded with a bullet through the lung and taken prisoner at Armentieres, France on 20 July 1916. He received treatment at German hospitals while being held as a POW in Germany. Sgt Norman arrived in Holland on 3 June 1918, was repatriated to England on 18 November 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 16 May 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London.
