Outdoor portrait of Australian Prisoner of War (POW) 4305 Private (Pte) David Lewis Evans, 28th Battalion, from Perth, Western Australia. Pte Evans enlisted at the age of 42 on 31 December 1915 and embarked for overseas on 1 April 1916. He was captured at Pozieres, France on 29 July 1916 and held as a POW until repatriated to London on 11 December 1918. His pay book was found in the German War Office in Berlin in September 1919. Pte Evans was discharged from the AIF on 13 March 1920 and remained in London with his wife. Handwritten note on back of photograph reads: "To Miss Chomley with best wishes and kind regards from 4305 Pte D.L. Evans, 28th Batt A.I.F. Coy 147, Limburg a/L." One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 102.
