Description

Outdoor portrait of Australian Prisoner of War (POW) 2363 Private (Pte) David Criddle, 28th Battalion, from Naraling, Western Australia. Pte Criddle enlisted on 2 August 1915 and embarked for overseas on 13 October 1915 aboard HMAT Themistocles. He was captured at Pozieres, France on 27 July 1916 and held as a POW until he was repatriated to England in December 1918. He arrived back in Australia on 13 April 1919. Pte Criddle's pay book was found at the German War Office in Berlin in September 1919. Handwritten note on back of photograph reads: "Miss M.E. Chumley,(sic) Secretary Australian Red X, 54 Victoria Street, London, England. To Miss Chumley (sic) with Best Wishes from D. Criddle, Prisoner of War, September 30th 1917." One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 103.
