Description

Outdoor portrait of two Australian Prisoners of War (POW) taken at German POW Camp Munster, Germany. On left is 1304 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Eric Walter Bell, 55th Battalion from Katoomba NSW and on right is Private (Pte) Wilfred Daniel Carr, 54th Battalion from Grong Grong NSW. L/Cpl Bell enlisted on 29 August 1914 and embarked for overseas on 20 October 1915 aboard HMAT Euripides. He was captured at Fleurbaix, France on 20 July 1916 and held as a POW in Germany until repatriated to England in November 1918. L/Cpl Bell embarked to return to Australia in June 1919. Pte Carr enlisted on 22 August 1915 and embarked for overseas on 20 December 1915 aboard HMAT Aeneas. He was captured at Laventie, France on 20 July 1916 and held as a POW in a number of German POW camps before being repatriated to England on 3 December 1918. Pte Carr arrived back in Australia on 26 March 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 163.
