Description

Outdoor portrait of a group of allied Prisoners of War (POW). Identified standing left to right is 3803 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Ernest Clifton Mara, 10th Battalion, from Jamestown, SA; Private (Pte) E. Cotham, from Liverpool, England; A. Sommo, from Russia; and 2684 L/Cpl Allan Mablison Smyth, 10th Battalion, from Cooke's Plain SA. Sitting from left to right is Pte A. Verey (Percy?), from Scotland; Pte F. Fleming from Liverpool; and Pte A. Ferguson, from Liverpool. L/Cpl Mara enlisted at the age of 22 on 10 August 1915 and embarked for overseas on 2 December 1915 aboard RMS Malwa. He was captured at Pozieres, France on 22 August 1916 and held as a POW until repatriated to England on 18 November 1918. L/Cpl Mara arrived back in Australia on 18 April 1919. L/Cpl Smyth enlisted at the age of 21 on 12 April 1915 and embarked for overseas on 2 July 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises. He was also captured at Pozieres on 22 August 1916 and held as a POW until repatriated to England on 28 November 1918. L/Cpl Smyth arrived back in Australia on 18 April 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London.
