Studio portrait of Australian Prisoner of War (POW) 5668 Private (Pte) Frederick James Begg, 16th Battalion, from Picton, Western Australia. He is wearing a straw hat turned up like a slouch hat with an Australian Imperial Force hat badge. Pte Begg enlisted at the age of 39 on 21 March 1916 and embarked for overseas on 18 July 1918 aboard HMAT Seang Bee. He was captured at Riencourt, France on 11 April 1917 and held as a POW in Germany. Pte Begg was repatriated to England on 1 December 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 2 August 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London.
