Description

Studio portrait of eight Australian Prisoners of War (POW) interned at Altdamm, Germany [now Poland]. Identified standing from left to right: 6527 Private (Pte) Harold Mounfield, 15th Battalion, from Sandgate, Queensland who enlisted on 17 May 1916 at the age of 23; 6555 Pte William Henry Rielly, 15th Battalion, from Toowoomba, Queensland who enlisted on 1 May 1916 at the age of 25; 2516 Pte Roy Neighbour, 15th Battalion, from Campbell Town, Tasmania who enlisted on 1 June 1915 at the age of 18; 3573 Pte Clifford Aubrey Barnes, 15th Battalion, from King Island, Tasmania who enlisted on 13 August 1915 at the age of 19; and 6302 Pte William Augustus Michael Lonergan, 15th Battalion, from Blackall, Queensland who enlisted on 12 April 1916 at the age of 33. Identified sitting from left to right: 4813 Pte John Flanagan, 16th Battalion, from Cootamundra, NSW who enlisted on 12 January 1916 at the age of 32; 2512 Pte William Neil Wakelin, 48th Battalion, from Cowell, South Australia who enlisted on 15 July 1916 at the age of 20; and 5388 Pte Charlie Evans, 15th Battalion, from Warwick, Queensland who enlisted on 6 September 1915 at the age of 21. All were captured at Riencourt, France, on 11 April 1917 and held in various POW camps in Germany, including, Atldamm, where this photograph was taken. At the end of hostilities, all were repatriated to England in the first half of December 1918 and arrived back in Australia between March and June 1919. Two months after returning to Australia, Pte Barnes died of influenza on 14 June 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 289.
