Studio portrait of Australian ex-Prisoner of War (POW) 3482A Sergeant (Sgt) James Raymond Bonnett, 54th Battalion, from Temora, NSW. Pte Bonnett enlisted at the age of 18 on 24 August 1915 and embarked for overseas on 17 December 1915 aboard HMAT Aeneas. He was wounded and captured at Laventie, France, on 20 July 1916 and wrote to AIF Headquarters in London "I am a prisoner of war in Germany and would be glad of any assistance you could render me regularly, I belong to the 5th Australian Anzac Division and am in need of same." He was held as a POW in various camps in Germany until repatriated to Holland and then on to England, arriving on 18 November 1918. Handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads "with best wishes to Miss M.E. Chomley from one her "old prisoners" 3482 Sgt. James R. Bonnett. sailing S.S. "Margha" from Plymouth 18/1/19." Sgt Bonnett arrived back in Australia on 5 March 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 317.
