Description
Studio portrait of a group of five allied Prisoners of War (POW) at a POW Camp in Bromberg, Germany (now Bydgoszcz, Poland). The photograph was sent to the Australian Red Cross in London by 4893 Corporal (Cpl) Edward Ernest Walker, 53rd Battalion, from Sydney, NSW, who is probably in the photograph but has not been identified. Cpl Walker enlisted at the age of 22 on 6 September 1915 and embarked for overseas on 8 March 1916 aboard HMAT Star of England. He was captured at Fleurbaix, France, on 20 July 1916 and held in a number of POW camps in Germany until repatriated to England on 1 December 1918. Cpl Walker arrived back in Australia on 26 April 1919. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 322.
