Description

Studio portrait of 1990 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Arthur Frederick Mason, 55th Battalion, from Norwich, Norfolk, England, who enlisted in the AIF in Sydney on 21 January 1915 at the age of 26 and embarked for overseas with the 3rd Battalion on 13 April 1915 aboard HMAT Kyarra. This photograph of him was taken in Cairo, Egypt. After serving at Gallipoli, L/Cpl Mason went on to serve on the Western Front and was wounded and captured at Fleurbaix, France, on 20 July 1916. He wrote from the POW camp at Wittenberg, on 8 August 1918, "Am going on well - still in same place keeping up hopes. My parcels are coming fairly good." L/Cpl Mason was repatriated to England on 2 January 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in England.
