Informal portrait of NX27917 Private (Pte) Alexander Harper (Alec) MacDonald, 2/33rd Battalion. He was born in Banffshire, Scotland, and emigrated to Australia with two of his brothers, following another brother who emigrated to Australia after serving with the AIF and being allocated a soldier settlement land grant at Mandagery. He enlisted at Paddington, NSW, on 4 June 1940 with his brother Roy. Pte Alec MacDonald was killed in action in Syria on 23 June 1941, aged 41. Roy MacDonald was captured at the fall of Singapore and died on the Burma Thai Railway.
