Informal portrait of NX52541Lieutenant Robert Victor Deem, 2/2nd Machine Gun Battalion. A bank clerk of Parkes, NSW, he enlisted in the Citizen's Military Force on its formation and later enlisted in the AIF in Paddington, NSW, on 3 July 1940, being commissioned on 17 December 1940. He completed a course at Randwick Small Arms School prior to embarking for the Middle East on 9 April 1941. He died of injuries he received in an accident in Palestine on 12 May 1942, aged 27. He is buried in the Gaza War Cemetery.
