Description
Heilly, France. 5 April 1918. View of the Chateau at Heilly. It was used as a Brigade Headquarters by the 3rd Division whilst the troops were engaged near the Ancre and the Somme rivers in holding up the enemy advance on Amiens. In November and December 1916 and January 1917, the 1st Anzac Headquarters was located at Heilly. The chateau was occupied by Generals Birdwood, White, Carruthers and Lotbiniere and probably other officers of the staff, but only the Corps Commander had an office there. The Chateau is very old and has extensive underground rooms. On one occasion General Birdwood represented a number of decorations to Australians in these underground rooms.
