Description
Using a changol (Chinese hoe) is 2/411207 Sapper Len R Yeomans, aged 21, of Parramatta, NSW, 1st Field Troop, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), during the construction of a 500 yard by 50 yard airfield at Fort Tapong in Northern Malaya. Members of the RAE have cleared the field from dense bamboo and jungle using only hand tools and explosives and are now preparing the earth for grading and leveling. Fort Tapong is a Malayan police outpost near the Thai border and is used by Australian and other Commonwealth security forces as a stepping off camp for jungle operations and border patrols.
