1/122 Major (Maj) Keith John O'Neill (right), aged 35, of Toowoomba, Qld, Officer Commanding A Company, 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) standing with a group of prominent Jahi villagers (including the headman, standing next to Maj O'Neill) showing them an illustrated 1961 booklet diary. As well as hunting for Communist terrorists (CTs) the Australians in Northern Malaya are conducting hearts and minds operations to gain the confidence and trust of the local populations who often assist the security forces by passing on information about the movements and whereabouts of CTs. Maj O'Neill previously served in Korea with 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), between 1953 and 1954 and later in South Vietnam with 8th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (8RAR) between 1969 and 1970. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1971.
