Nuttall, Edward Charles
Two original letters handwritten by 951 Private (Pte) Edward (Ted) Charles Nuttall who served with the 4th Battalion AIF. Both letters are undated. One letter was written by Pte Nuttall to his sister May, whilst he was camped at Mena Camp, Egypt. This letter is 3 A4 pages in length, with descriptions of his camp being close to the pyramids and 10 miles from Cairo where he gets leave '...very often'. He also makes mention of the battle between the Emden and the Sydney. The second is a 4 page letter written on smaller sized paper, whilst Pte Nuttall was recovering from dysentry in St Georges Hospital, Malta. This letter is written to his brother Harry whom he tells 'It is a good home here plenty of tucker & cigarettes & leave'. Pte Nuttall was killed in action on 2 March 1917. Quotes from these letters were used in Ronald Austin's 2007 publication titled 'The fighting fourth: a history of Sydney's 4th Battaion, 1914-1919'.
