Badge of the Polish Scouting Association with inscription 'CZUWAJ'

Stamped metal badge with screw attachment. The badge is a Paty cross with a circle in the centre containing a Fleur-de-lis (symbol of the Boy Scout movement). The word 'CZUWAJ' ('Be Prepared') is carried in raised letters across the horizontal arms of the cross, and a wreath, passing under the horizontal but over the vertical arms of the cross, encircles the centre. The whole may once have been gilded, as the entire reverse and most of the wreath retain gilding. The reverse of the badge is impressed 'P 81'. Between the badge and the screw back, which is marked 'PALESTINE' and has other markings in what appear to be Hebrew, are trapped a small fragment of red fabric and a Palestinian 5 Mil coin dated 1934.

Associated Polish serviceman, Lieutenant Nicholas Nikon, who served in the Polish Army and was interned by the Soviet NKVD. After his release from internment in 1941, he served in the Middle East with the Polish Carpathian Brigade and then fought in Italy at the battle for Monte Cassino in May, 1944.
