Description
Informal portrait of 1/4200 Private (Pte) Rod K Mullings, of Longreach, Qld, Assault Pioneer Platoon, Support Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR). On the night of 27 July 1958, Pte Mullings was a member of a three man ambush party who concealed themselves in a disused mill shed on a rubber estate near Sungei Siput. Several days previously, the shed was discovered to be a food collection point for a group of Communist terrorists (CTs) operating in the area. At about 11.40 pm, a group of four CTs entered the mill shed to collect the food and in the ensuing action, three CTs were killed and a fourth escaped in what was to be known as the Mangling mill ambush.
