Description

Informal portrait of the Australian Relay Swimming Team competing at the Inter Allied Games held at the Pershing Stadium in Paris. This team came second in its heat with America, both teams beating the world's record. It was third to America in the final race, Canada being second, all three teams beating the world's record created the day before. Identified, left to right: 1334 Private William Johnson from Palmers Island, NSW; 33335 Driver (Dvr) Harold Vincent Carroll from Footscray, Victoria; Captain James Edmund Savage OBE MC from Melbourne, Victoria; 5114 Dvr Leslie John Hume from Baggabri, NSW; and 35009 Sergeant Ernest Carter from Melbourne. Note the Rising Sun emblem on their singlets.
