"Anzac Hostel - Opening day - The Minister's address"
Senator E D Millen, Minister for Repatriation, makes his address at the official opening of Anzac Hostel. The Hostel was established to provide a home for totally and permanently incapacitated men whose disability was due to war service and who required nursing care but no active medical or surgical treatment. Included in this photograph are: Mr Greenwood, Chairman of the Victorian (Honorary) State Board; the Honourable J A Boyd, Member of Parliament; Mr (later Sir) Robert Gibson, Deputy Chairman of the first (Honorary) Repatriation Commission; Sir Arthur Stanley, State Governor; Senator E D Millen, Minister for Repatriation; Major J E Barrett, Inspector; General (later Sir) George Cuscaden, Director General Australian Army Medical Service; Dr J F Agnew, First Principal Medical Officer of the Repatriation Department; and Colonel J M Semmens VD, Member of the First Repatriation Commission (Honorary). One of a series of 43 photographs published by the Commonwealth of Australia's Department of Repatriation in '"AFTER" THE DIGGER CARRIES ON', a presentation album of images portraying the experiences of returned Australian servicemen. This cloth-bound album with lizard-skin impression was presented to Robert Gibson CBE, the then Deputy Chairman of the Repatriation Commission on 23 October 1919 in Melbourne.
