Description
Informal portrait of 2nd Lieutenant (Lt) Douglas Freeman, 15th Reinforcements, 16th Battalion, of Perth, WA (formally of Brighton, England) sitting behind a 15inch dud shell, possibly from 'Granny' a 15 inch Howitzer (heavy artillery gun) that greatly assisted the allied advance by pounding the German concrete fortresses. The shell had been located in a bombed out building at Messines. Lt Freeman enlisted on 25 October 1915 and embarked from Fremantle aboard HMAT Ulysses on 1 April 1916. He was killed in action in Belgium on 26 September 1917 aged 38 years. He had also fought with the Sussex Yeomanry during the South African War.
