Informal portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Charles Dane Brown, of 16th Battalion, a commercial traveller of Melbourne, Vic, reading a book in his quarters in France. Lt Brown enlisted in Perth, WA, on 30 July 1915 and embarked from Fremantle aboard HMAT Aeneas on 17 April 1916. He was killed in action in Polygon Wood on 26 September 1917 aged 26 years and was buried where he fell. He is commemorated on The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
