Description
Informal portrait of soldiers of the 13th Battalion framed in the doorway of a hut. In this group is 51 Sergeant (Sgt) Charles Horace (Bob) Lewis, (probably second from the top, right), a pipe in his mouth. Sgt Lewis, a clerk of Sydney, was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England, serving for eighteen months as a volunteer in the Royal Naval Reserve, before coming to Australia aged eighteen. He enlisted in August 1914, serving in Gallipoli and France. He was wounded at least five times and was mortally wounded on 3 July 1918 at Villers Bretonneux.
