MODIFIED LEANDER CLASS CRUISER HMAS HOBART WAS ORIGINALLY COMMISSIONED INTO THE RN AS HMS APOLLO AND RENAMED ON TRANSFER TO THE RAN IN 1938. HOBART WAS THE ONLY SHIP OF THIS CLASS (THE OTHERS BEING HMAS SYDNEY AND HMAS PERTH) TO SURVIVE WORLD WAR 2 ACTION AND WAS DECOMMISSIONED AND PLACED IN RESERVE IN DECEMBER 1947. IN 1953 SHE WAS SELECTED FOR CONVERSION TO A TRAINING SHIP AND ALTHOUGH WORK ON HER BEGAN, THE SCHEME WAS CANCELLED. SHE WAS RETURNED TO RESERVE AND SOLD IN FEBRUARY 1962.
