Description

"Australian darkroom made from the packing case of a Martinsyde Aircraft, converted into a two-section darkroom, the rear end for developing and printing, and the front for washing, glazing etc. Here it is mounted on a truck at Kantara, for removal to (the) railhead every time we moved dromes. The darkroom had a special truck to itself". Photographers identified, left to right, 455 Private Oswald Hillam Coulson, 463 Private Harry Victor Leckie, Despatch rider Thompson, 115 Private Norman Henry Clutterbuck and 473 Frederick Charles Wright. It is perhaps coincidence that the next of kin for all four men were listed at addresses in the suburb of Newtown, Geelong, Victoria. 473 Frederick Charles Wright was killed on 29 August 1917 by a bullet wound to his head in his darkroom at Deir-el-Belah Aerodrome. A court of investigation ruled the cause accidental, declaring there insufficient evidence to prove that the injuries were self-inflicted.
