Description

2/10667 Sergeant (Sgt) R R (Jock) Richardson, MM, MID, (standing on road centre), armed with a US M1 .30 Calibre Carbine, waits for his men as they alight from an armoured truck, or 'coffin', on a road through a rubber estate in Perak. These soldiers are members of the 'stand by' platoon from B Company, 2nd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), and are always ready to move out at 30 minutes notice and have enough supplies to stay out in the jungle for at least four days. A short time ago word came through that seven Communist terrorists had been sighted on this estate, ten miles from Sungei Siput, and now Sgt Richardson’s platoon are going to pursue them by foot through the jungle. Sgt Richardson also served in Korea as a Lance Corporal with 2RAR from 1953-1954 where he was awarded the Military Medal, which was gazetted in the London Gazette on 24 November 1953. He later served in South Vietnam as a Warrant Officer Class 2 with 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR), from 1968-1969 where he was awarded a Mention in Despatches, which was gazetted in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 4 September 1969.
