Description
Portsmouth, England, C 1855. Port bow view of the first-rate line-of-battle ship HMS Victory. Victory was built at the Royal Dockyard, Cheltham, laid down in 1759 and launched in 1765. Victory is most remembered as Nelson's flagship and she bore his body back to England after Trafalgar. She was in and out of commission over the next decades until she was put into dry dock at Portsmouth in 1922, where she remains today. She is still a serving ship in the Royal Navy. Note the turret ship in the right hand corner. (This photograph has been incorrectly attributed as HMVS Nelson)(Naval Historical Collection)
