Description
Wampo (Wang Po), Thailand. c. September 1945. Japanese soldiers evacuating the Tavoy-Wampo road, coming in to surrender. This road was still under construction by prisoner of war (POW) labourers when the war ended. Following the Japanese surrender, it became a temporary holding camp for Australian, British, Dutch and American recovered POWs who had been engaged in railway maintenance, or the construction of defence positions for the Japanese in various locations in Burma or Thailand. Another recovered group had been part of the Wampo-Tavoy road construction work force. Wampo is approximately 114 kilometres north of Nong Pladuk (also known as Non Pladuk), or 300 kilometres south of Thanbyuzayat. (Donor A. Mackinnon)
